Cotton buds (Q tips) are the single biggest global polluter.

With over 552.34 billion cotton buds produced and discarded each year the enormity of the problem has only very recently been partially addressed but we still have a long way to go. By choosing LOUÏ you are getting involved and making an impact.

Marine plastic pollution has impacted at least 267 species worldwide.

This includes 86% of all sea turtle species, 44% of all seabird species and 43% of all marine mammal species.  When marine organisms ingest plastic debris, these contaminants enter their digestive systems, and over time accumulate in the food web.

Microplastics have been found in tap water, beer, salt.

Microplastics are present in all samples collected in the world’s oceans, including the Arctic. Several chemicals used in the production of plastic materials are known to be carcinogenic and to interfere with the body’s endocrine system.

Some Facts.

Under the influence of solar UV radiation, wind, currents and other natural factors, plastic breaks down into small particles called microplastics (particles smaller than 5 mm) or nanoplastics (particles smaller than 100 nm). The small size makes them easy for marine life to ingest accidentally.

  • Toxic contaminants also accumulate on the surface of plastic as a result of prolonged exposure to seawater. When marine organisms ingest plastic debris, these contaminants enter their digestive systems, and over time accumulate in the food web.

  • The transfer of contaminants between marine species and humans through the consumption of seafood has been identified as a health hazard, and research is ongoing.

While cotton buds (Q tips) are have been banned in a number of countries they can still be supplied until present stocks exhausted. Many countries have not banned cotton buds because there has not been a practical alternative. Now with Loui there is. The facts show that this is not just about wildlife but also our life as we too are suffering.
